Playing "hot Potato" with Gaza

Reader comment on item: How to Turn Gaza Over to Egypt

Submitted by DrRJP (United States), Mar 31, 2008 at 00:14

Many people do not know that, when Israel signed a peace treaty with Egypt in 1979, Egypt refused to take back Gaza and ceded it to Israel. Likewise, after Israel signed a peace treaty with Jordan, Jordan also refused to take back the West Bank, and ceded it to the Israelis.

The reasons why are very simple. In the case of Egypt, Palestinian Arabs were as violent towards their Egyptian "Brothers" as they were towards their Israeli enemies. The "Muslim Brotherhood," of which Hamas is a direct spinoff, had been launching terror attacks at Egypt from Gaza prior to the 1948 War.

The 1948 War gave Egypt an opportunity to illegally capture and occupy Gaza in an effort to put down the insurrection.

Between 1948 and 1967, Egypt really did run Gaza like a prison...preventing Palestinians from entering or leaving, and shooting any of them who tried to escape. During Egypt's illegal occupation, 9,000 Palestinians were murdered by Egyptian police forces. There were no cries of "occupation," or any calls to form an independent Palestinian state

THat is why, after Israel took back Gaza -- I say, "took back" because it was part of the Mandate to create a Jewish National Homeland and subsequently signed a peace treaty with Egypt, Egypt said, "Good Riddance" ceded Gaza to Isael.

Egypt will posture all hey want, but in truth, they feel lucky to not have the Gaza burden on their backs..
