Reader comment on item: How to Turn Gaza Over to Egypt

Submitted by jennifer solis (United States), Feb 7, 2008 at 17:15

I believe the onus has already shifted from Israel towards Egypt. Hosni Mubarak has expressed his rejection of the idea, but neglects speaking as to why Egypt does not wish to take responsibility for the care of Gazans. The Arab and Muslim world does not hesitate to blame Israel for Israel's "unfair and cruel" treatment of the Gazan citizenry; however, when the situation presents an alternative, Egyptian aid, from a Muslim dominated country, Mubarak rejects it. Why? Where's the outrage from the Arab and Muslim world at Egypt's refusal to come to Gaza's "rescue", if previous treatment from Israel has been so "cruel"?

I agree with Daniel Pipes on this one. "Once Jeruselem cuts supplies, Cairo has no choice but to furnish them", and the bit about Mubarak having coped with Islamists for 27 years, and Cairo's interest in stopping rockets flying into Israel lest Israeli reprisal and possible all-out war. These are good points. I believe Israel should not wait for the Western "intervention", however. Israel should "grab the brass ring" now. Give a "two-weeks notice" to the inhabitants of Gaza, and see if Egypt is as "unfair and cruel" towards Gazans as her previous benefactor.

After all, if fault does not lie with Gazans, but with Israel, why should there be a wall between Gaza and Egypt, President Mubarak?
