Dumping Gaza on Egypt plays right into the Muslim Brotherhood's hand.

Reader comment on item: How to Turn Gaza Over to Egypt

I have to believe that Doc Pipes' interest in giving Gaza to Egypt is based on a belief that there is a diplomatic advantage that could be achieved by making that move. Unfortunately, all this planning for diplomatic initiatives and talking points that could be used if Gaza were dumped on Egypt is based on arguments and ideals that Egypt doesn't care about, and the Muslim Brotherhood doesn't care about, and Hamas doesn't care about.

The Muslim Brotherhood is the ultimate, determining influence in this whole process, and they are immune to such subtleties, though they are entirely willing to belabor any of these points as long as that belaboring process serves their larger purposes. The purpose of the Muslim Brotherhood is jihad, pure and simple. Diplomacy is merely a distracting gesture that jihadists use to conceal the sword that is being drawn and raised for a swift slicing stroke. Anyone basing the future of Israel on such diplomacy is merely agreeing to waste energy on a doomed distraction from the real job at hand: disabling the hand that raises the sword of the prophet.

Even though Doc Pipes' reasoning is sound, and the logic of his arguments is sound, the energy behind the Gaza problem is driven by motives that simply don't care about that reasoning or care about that logic. Regional and international bodies could listen and nod in a sham demonstration of approval when such reasoning and logic are trotted out for consideration, but the process underlying all these events is jihad, and treaties and ceasefires and diplomacy only are used when using them enables the jihadist to gain some advantage by building more power or redeploying assets.

Underlying all the diplomatic initiatives and talking points Doc Pipes advocates is an assumption that humanitarian motives direct the actions and decisions of the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt, and Hamas. The Muslim Brotherhood has no humanitarian motivation. They use humanitarian gestures for temporary political advantage as part of the jihad, but they care less about the welfare of Gazans than they care about using Gazans as props in their holy war.
