Reader comment on item: Bush on Israel: Heartburn for All

Submitted by Shalom Noury (Italy), Mar 4, 2003 at 13:24

I wouldn't be so sure about the conclusion: to me it looks more as if Bush is trying to both keep the vat full and the wife drunk, as they say in Italian. However, when push comes to shove it will be Israel that would be required to pay up, also because it is the one who holds the material goods while on the other side there will always be nothing more than promises on a piece of paper.

If past and present experiences are anything to go by, then the pressure will be on Israel. The only hope is that the general terroristic world scene will go out of control, which will leave the EU (and the US) unable to keep their eyes closed, beyond their usual pay-up to terror by selling out Israel. Once it hits them CONSISTENTLY hard, that old tactic will not work anymore, or will not be enough to both placate the electorate as a temporary solution. The only solution: Israel, be tough!

Ceding to pressure invites only more of the same.
