I think the answer to whether Islamism trumps democracy has been answered in favor of Islamism. The Islamists can use 'democracy' quite well, like Hamas in Gaza, the Muslim Bros. in recent Egyptian elections, the Iranian Shiites in Iraq, and now Nasrallah gaining, through the vote in the majority Shiite state of Lebanon, just down the road the majority in Lebanon.

Bret Stephens had an article on the ed. page of the Wall Street Journal last week about the Lebanese family demographics, 2 children in Christian families (those who have not emigrated west in the past few decades), 5 in Druze and Sunni, and 9 in Shiite families. Then there are the demographics in Europe, not to mention the Islamic buyout of southern Spain...
