Separation of state and religion

Reader comment on item: Spreading Islam in American Public Schools

Submitted by Krishna Muthurangu (United Kingdom), May 25, 2005 at 05:47

I am a politics student from the UK, and it may seem to many of the readers of these articles that I do not understand the problems occurring in the American school system, or even in its foreign policy. In my view school systems should be truely secular, with no religion being given promience. There is no reason why Christianity should be given more coverage than Hinduism, Islam or any other religions, therefore to stop bias, there should be a seperation of state and religion. And while I feel that all views have a right to be aired, commenter Riva T Philip seems to have expressed the most racist, naive and uninformed views I have ever heard. Philip argues that the US should support only Christian countries; well I must have stopped watching the news, because I don't think India is a Christian state, like most countries it has members of the Christian faith within its borders but it is mainly a Hindu state. Also many of your readers seem to have this view that the Muslim faith is inherently wrong/evil. Not being a Muslim myself I cannot comment upon the the tiny details of the faith, but the main message it sends is not one of hate, but like every religion be it Christianity or Hinduism there are always people who will take it to the extremes. It is true that currently there is an increase in the amount of Muslims turning to extremism, however I dont believe that this is enough to damn a whole culture, which am sure most of your readers (my self included) have little or no experience of.
