Islamic Indoctrination

Reader comment on item: Spreading Islam in American Public Schools

Submitted by Wendy Carney (United States), Mar 15, 2005 at 14:54

I read this article for the first time today and was absolutely horrified.
What happened to not allowing religion to be taught in our schools. They passed laws that made it illegal for our children to pray but they can bring in other (non-Christian) faiths and show our children how to pray to their gods....I was under the impression that prayer period was not allowed.

I am all for teaching our children diversity and tolerance for other cultures. But I do draw the line at teaching my child to pray to another religions false Gods. It was my understanding that it was a parent's rights and responsibility to teach their children basic moral values including faith and trust in a higher power, not the school.

A permission slip or some sort of notification should have been sent home with those kids before this speaker was allowed to come in. Also there should have been in place some sort of parental panel to review the schools' change in book. I would not be sending my child to a school that allows this type of radical change.

I think not only the student's rights were violated by forcing them to listen to this speaker and participate and by teaching them this book, but the parent's rights were violated. I am a single, Christian mother. It is no one else's responsibility but my own to teach my daughter about God and other religions. If as she gets older and wants to know more about other religions she will have the core values that I have taught her to make her own educated decision regarding faith. But the school is not the place to learn about religion - our own laws state that. By taking the action that they took, they have broken not only the laws of our nation, but they have violated the parental trust placed in them as educators to keep our children safe and continue promoting the values we as parents have begun.

I am absolutely horrified and offended by this action. I can only thank God (the one true God of the Christian faith) that my child does not attend school in Scottsdale.
