Can Islam be molded

Reader comment on item: Can Islam Be Reformed?

Submitted by Nelson D'Silva (India), Jul 2, 2013 at 06:42

Many modern thinkers are of the opinion that religions, however virulent, can be molded into something more in keeping with the tolerant culture that exists today. Unfortunately, what has been written in the holy books cannot be rewritten or deliberately interpreted to connote something that it was not meant to be. Just because a religion like Islam comes across as being violent doesn't mean its characteristics can be changed into a religion of tolerance by a few persons in authority believing that it has been wrongly interpreted. This is being delusional. Unless we all accept a culture and a religion for what it actually is, we will only be exposing ourselves to greater danger and eventually annihilation. Nobody can claim absolute knowledge about a religion but the adherents or former practitioners of that religion.
