Erraneous assertion - Change in christiandom was rapid

Dr. Pipes ...says "In the Christian case, the battle to limit the Catholic Church's political role lasted painfully long. It took another six centuries for the Church fully to reconcile itself to democracy".

So is the author alluding that the change, if it will, take that long a time. The crucial changes in terms of actual change of power away from church occured in christian world rapidly with the rise of Martin Luther. Of course church's reconciling with democracy has never happened and may never happen.

It must be remembered that rapid changes accompanying renaissance and weakening of church happened when communication was million times slower than what it is today.
