Are Muslims doomed to follow the same path?

Reader comment on item: A Democratic Islam?

Islam, like all pre-modern religions is undemocratic in spirit. No less than the others, however, it has the potential to evolve in a democratic direction.

I don't doubt that. However, it took defeats in war, both civil and external, for the followers of Judaism and Christianity to create and embrace the philosophies and will that allowed them to truly evolve into embracing anti-tyrannical democracy.

Must Muslims follow the same path, or are they doomed to suffer the tragedies of the Thirty Years' War and the two World Wars - but this time, fought with nuclear weapons?
