The Evolution of a Mistake-Period

Reader comment on item: Give Gaza to Egypt

Submitted by Jay (United States), Jan 30, 2008 at 22:39

The idea that Israel would be smart to give Gaza to the Egyptians is not smart. Israel never had good reason to leave the southern strip along Gaza. It was understandable to leave the settlements that had a tall toll on soldiers to satisfy the settlement dream of the few. But a one mile or so security strip along southern Gaza would have "helped" monitor and prevent rocket parts from entering Gaza, and the free for all wall from comming down.

These are the same reasons why Israel should keep a two mile wide or so strip along the Jordan.Israel is losing the ability to set principles of reason, win them, and stick with them.Hamas has won in Gaza. The same way Hezbollah won in southern Lebanon. Israel has lost. And the relationship of seperation and understanding with the Egyptians is turning gray and vulnerable.

Washington and western capitals should declare the Gaza experiment a failure? No.Israel should do the declaring and retake southern Gaza. Its their backyard. Simply put, there are some lands won in war that Israel should not cede. Period.
