Reader comment on item: A Strongman for Iraq?

Submitted by Ahmad Kamal Abdollah (Malaysia), Apr 30, 2003 at 10:25

If there is any benefit to this war, it is the fact that a dictator has been ousted.

Note that for many, many years Saddam was pretty much a 'benevolent' dictator, bringing incredible progress to his nation and hints of democracy. Look how well that turned out. Let's face it, dictators will only remain benevolent for so long, as their primary means of staying in power is through force, propaganda and oppression.

There is a definite implication here of authoritarian rule. This is astounding. If one does not wish to see immediate steps towards democracy, one might as well have let nature run its course and see if Saddam's regime could have eventually made way for a democracy in half a century or so.
