The New IraqReader comment on item: A Strongman for Iraq? Submitted by Hikmat Faraj (United States), Apr 28, 2003 at 10:11 For once there is a highly rational perspective. Being of Iraqi origin, I couldn't agree with you more. Destroying the Saddam regime is only a small part of the scenario--small but necessary, but definitely not sufficient. This scare me, and a lot of Iraqis, immensely--especially those who are not blinded by conspiracy theories. As an acquaintance recently said, "I find it hard to believe that the American administration was not aware that they were opening a can of worms." Maybe I will be an optimist and hope that some good will come out of this for Iraq. Democracy is a learning process, as you so correctly put it. You do not collect it like an inheritance.
