Reader comment on item: Muslim Soldiers in the West, Criticized by their Communities
in response to reader comment: I am a muslim soldier in US Army

Submitted by Frank Mascaro (United States), Jan 6, 2007 at 14:43

People are suspicious by nature. especially when national security is on the line. I'm sure you've read stories about what happened to the Japanese Americans during WWII. They were separated from their families, lost their jobs and homes in the name of national security.

My grandfather, who was an Italian American, was a short wave radio ham. Even after he served this country in the Navy during WWII, the Feds came and confiscated his equipment. Maybe your neighbors need to know what the Muslims here really think. Tell them that you are an American as well as a Muslim. They need to learn that, deep in your heart, you are thrilled to be here. If you find that you can't say these things, maybe you need to reorganize your priorities. Maybe you shouldn't be serving in the U.S. Military. But because you are a military intel officer, I believe that you believe you're doing the right thing.
