If conversion to Islam is done freely, why is it that throughtout Islamic history to this present time, conversion to Islam was done by force, on pain of death, as a rule and not an exception?

There was just a reminder of it with the two Foxnews reporters when they were kidnapped by Islamofacist terrorists in Gaza in order to save their lives there were forced at gunpoint to become Muslim.
