"Right of Return"

Reader comment on item: Bush Promotes a Palestinian "Right of Return"

Submitted by Eve Laing (Australia), Jan 14, 2008 at 07:22

I am so tired of hearing of the "Palestinian right of return" as if it is the only time this phenomenon has occurred.........Looking at it in a world context, why does no one remind those interested that if the right of return is a fair subject to debate, then the question MUST be asked: What about the right of return of those millions of others, Jews, Christians, Gypsies and too many etcs.......that have for centuries been disposessed of their homes with no thought ever of a "right of return"?......Why no mention of the Jews dispossessed from their homes in the now Palestinian part of Israel in the '40s when Israel was divided into Palestinian and Jewish. They were forced out without being able to take anything.....or the Jews living in Mecca and Medina who were forced to leave their ancient homes by the Muslims?

Considering the forced abandonment of millions of homes throughout the world over centuries, why are the Palestines so privileged that THEY alone, have the right of return? Why is this never mentioned in order to bring the Palestinian right of return into a more truthful perspective and world context?
