Reader comment on item: Bush Promotes a Palestinian "Right of Return"
in response to reader comment: whose right of return?

Submitted by Edward Halper (United States), Jan 16, 2008 at 14:04

How convenient, Joe, to begin your history from the point of Jewish immigration to Israel! Why not start with the Romans dispersing the Jews or the Arab conquest? As you well know, many of the so-called "Palestinians" do not have deep roots in the area: their families came because Jewish immigration increased economic opportunities. And was it really the Jewish return that created the problem--or rather the Arab leaders who used it as an issue to exploit and oppress their own ignorant and gullible people?

Has the Arab immigration to the UK provoked the rioting and violence that the Jewish immigration provoked throughout the 20th century? Do you seriously want to blame Jewish immigrants for Arab violence against them? You might as well blame the Jews for the Holocaust.

Many Arabs left Israel to take up arms against the state. By justice--as well as British common law--they forfeited their rights by doing so. No state allows citizens who refuse the recognize the sovereignty of the state.

To suggest that the descendants of these people should "return" to Israel and live with the people they continue to hate is as silly as it is unjust to all concerned. The so-called "one state" solution is tantamount to a forced marriage.
