Reader comment on item: On Being Borked

Submitted by Debbie Wallis Landau (United States), Aug 26, 2003 at 22:14

No one other than Daniel Pipes could feel his personal, intense pain from not only being selectively misquoted and understood, but the additional frustration of a moratorium on speaking out while the nomination process was going on.

I cannot think of any one living individual who is more necessary and qualified to serve re: The Institute of Peace. Unfortunately, cowards and clumsy writers exist in the media just as they do in general society. I wonder if journalism schools are doing a good enough job instilling the value of careful research and impartiality.

Having been out of journalism school at U-M for almost 30 years, I don't see a satisfying enough improvement in the general ethics of reporting. Hopefully, there are enough courageous columnists and broadcasters out there who can highlight the distortions of this recent public 'borking' and use it instructively.

As for Daniel Pipes, all the best to you on this new appointment. You have been, and continue, to be our visionary. Hopefully others can learn from your wisdom.
