Intelligence or wisdom

Reader comment on item: Profs Who Hate America

Submitted by R. Frank (United States), Nov 13, 2002 at 07:09

Dear Sir,

Having spent approx. 10 years in universities and fully funding both of my children's college funds the week each was born, one could say that I have always been a proponent of higher education. Nevertheless, I have always recognized that there is a definite difference between intelligence and wisdom { aka common sense }.

As of late, I am beginning to believe the two may be inversely proportional. While many profs possess a wealth of knowledge in a specialized area, I have met very few who have an overall sense of the world outside of their confines. In the real world , when vacancies occur in top level management positions, you won't find businesses recruiting the staff members from the top business schools in our country.

I have always clung to one firm belief in life - those who can, do, and those who can't, either teach or advise!!
