U.S. Does Not Need Iraqi Oil

Reader comment on item: Profs Who Hate America

To those who assert that the USA wants to take over Iraq's oil supply, this is 1970's thinking. The US neither wants nor needs Iraq's oil. Have they not noticed that the US has been getting along quite well without oil from Iraq for at least 12 years? ( In fact, without a great deal of pain, the US could even do without Saudi oil, which only supplies about 8 per cent per annum of US oil requirements).

And if the US is so desperate for oil, why is it a staunch ally of the only country in the Middle East which has no oil of its own, Israel?

Why are Chomsky and others so cynical about their government's intentions? Why does everything need to be explained by a secret conspiracy theory, the existence of which is only vouchsafed to cranky university professors?

Talk about being paranoid !!
