Reader comment on item: [The Hamas Electoral Victory:] Democracy's Bitter Fruit

Submitted by Harrak (Canada), Jan 27, 2006 at 11:37

I actually agree with all the element on this article except 2 points:

1- underlining the existence of an enemy ideology brought by democracy and advocating dictatorship. Well see Latin American politics through the 80s and 90s. You only radicalize the people when you deprive them from Demos Crotos. You have to give a chance and work ideologically to provoke the will for change by giving an example of wellbeing and social justice. Unfortunatly the USA now is an example of social injustive -new orleans- and poverty -streets of New York- Not by cracking down on democracy like in Algeria in early 90s. That has proven ineffective.

2- Comparing Hamas election to Hitler election!! Hamas is an elected group now representing a population under occupation and colonization. Who colonized Germany at the time Hitler was elected?? was in Bavaria any Jewish settlements?? so that is a weak comparison.

The west needs to convince the palestinians that negociations work. If not, wether absorbing Hamas or Isolating it, there will always be a terrorist group on the horizon. It is time to leave double-standarism aside and work serious in international affairs. there is a french sayying:

"le vent en emport le vent, le sang amene le sang.." meaning that the wind brings wind and blood brings blood. I add, realism and democracy brings peace. Religion fanaticisim be it in Palestine or the white house, it brings terror that we should all stand against.
