No one saw this coming, why not?

Reader comment on item: [The Hamas Electoral Victory:] Democracy's Bitter Fruit

Submitted by Kenneth S. Besig (Israel), Jan 28, 2006 at 11:32

Not one single Israeli or international intelligence agency saw the Hamas victory coming. Not one single so called Middle East or Arab or Israeli political expert saw the Hamas victory coming. Not one single media expert saw the Hamas winning, and now these same experts are going to explain, analyze, legitimize, and justify the Hamas victory as if now they know what they are talking about.
Give me a break, please!

The only answer left for Israel is to use her considerable military forces to enter the Ramallah and Gaza districts and kill or arrest anyone associated with the Hamas leadership, whether it is the social, military, or political leadership. And of course to kill or arrest any lower ranking Hamas members they can.

Next any and all Hamas weapons and money should be confiscated and any businesses associated with Hamas destroyed and their owners arrested.

All of this must be done very very soon, otherwise the travesty of democracy which Hamas utilized to gain power will begin to grant it legitimacy in the world community and eventually Hamas will invite Iranian and Syrian military and diplomatic forces to open embassies and bases in their sovereign territory and the fighting that is sure to follow will be far more destructive than any Israeli military action taken now. Hamas won this victory because of it's openly anti Israel and anti Semitic platform, and of course because of it's strident calls for the genocide of the Jewish People, not in spite of them. Certainly, Hamas also appealed to the Palestinians who have watched their Palestinian Authority rob them blind for years, and yet Israel has the duty to itself and the region to take strong and decisive military action immediately to protect itself.

This Hamas victory is no theoretical game of political science, real human lives are at stake here and the time for Israeli preventive actions is now.
