Reader comment on item: Identifying Islamists through Interrogations

Submitted by Charles Martel (United States), Jan 16, 2016 at 17:42

Dr. Pipes' thesis on the subject of Muslim immigration fails on one key note. That is, while first generation Muslim immigrants may indeed be gentle and moderate, the abhorrent, aggressive violence codified in the Islamic doctrine itself ensures that some second or even third generation descendants will be far less gentle and anything but moderate. The European example validates the paradigm. So many examples exist of 2nd generation jihadists spawned from moderate European Muslim parents that the problem could hardly be more glaringly obvious.

Dr. Pipes places a good deal of stock in the idea that in the past fifty years Islam has markedly changed for the worse and fifty years hence it may change for better. In this regard, he could very well be proven right. But I do not feel comfortable hoping and waiting for a pacified version of Islam to emerge. Instead, it seems that the time is now for an honest and open widespread dialogue about whether or not Islam is compatible with Western, secular notions of individual freedom, equal rights for women and so on. Once such a dialogue occurs, I am quite confident that Islam, in all its mainstream forms, will be shown to be antithetical to our most cherished and basic beliefs. After that, we will have to think long and hard about the wisdom of permitting an alien, antagonistic belief system like Islam to proliferate and metastasize out of control in our midst.
