Fine Plan, But PC Extremism Huge Obstacle

Reader comment on item: Identifying Islamists through Interrogations

In order to successfully carry out such a plan, one would have to obtain permission from the authorities to train personnel in the finer points of Islam. Right away there could be issues, since you are making an assumption that there can be something problematic about Islam, even if the problem only lies with a subjective interpretation it. No matter how much blood Islamists spill, Westerners are reluctant to criticize religion, any religion. Political correctness is a formidable barrier with many layers: exaggerated reverence for the First Amendment even applying to non-citizens, Western belief in the Golden Rule demanding consideration for other religions as we demand respect from them, sensitivity towards dark-skinned immigrants from third world countries, fear of being called racist or Islamophobic, and America's historic role as a haven from religious persecution.

The case would have to made that national security requires us to be discriminating, but only in the sense of being discerning and not prejudiced.
