Reader comment on item: Romney's Remarkable Speech in Jerusalem
in response to reader comment: Obama's accomplishments

Submitted by Sigmund Derman (United States), Aug 17, 2012 at 00:22

On point 4) of my last comment, I guess I intended to say "beneficial overall." It came out "beneficial. overlords." I know that some will say that this is a "Freudian slip" and that it really means I want the unions to be overlords. But, be that as it may, I'm going to sign off of the domestic right/left discussion now. But before I do, I would say in answering the general question about Jews and politics, that Jews (and I am a Jew) tend to favor social programs that ameliorate poverty based on a long tradition dating back to the Torah. When we have to choose between support of Israel and support of the poor and the disadvantaged ("...the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow....") it's very tough and one has to look closely at the issues.

I may be wrong, but I just don't think that the more rabid rhetoric from Romney in support of Israel has any substance. I doubt it amounts to any more than what Israel is getting and can continue to get from Obama and the Democrats. There is a strong strain of anti-Semitism on the left (among some leftists) and I acknowledge that. But I do not think that Obama buys into it. So he has my vote.
