Reader comment on item: Romney's Remarkable Speech in Jerusalem
in response to reader comment: How will American Jews respond?

How will American Jews respond? I believe that most will realize that Romney is simply pandering to their interests. They will, for the most part, reject his candidacy and vote for the more socially progressive candidate Barack Obama. That's what I intend to do and that's what most of my Jewish friends intend to do. Romney certainly will attract some Jewish voters, but most of these politically conservative Jews would have voted for him anyway, without the inflammatory speech in Jerusalem.

I doubt that he or his strategists scripted this speech in order to get more Jewish voters. He did this to solidify the deep pocket support of people such as Adelson and the Koch brothers. In that sense, it was a smart move on Romney's part. But I hope that Adelson and the others realize that if Romney becomes President, he won't need them for the next four years. He has quite a record of switching from one extreme to the other. Romney seems to offer more to Israel, but I believe he would switch on a dime and sell Israel out if it were in his interests to do so. Obama offers less and he offers it in a very reserved and qualified manner. His hedges and qualifications do seem somewhat offensive to many Jews, but I trust him to fulfill on what he has promised, even though it is not as much as what Romney has promised.
