Reader comment on item: Romney's Remarkable Speech in Jerusalem
in response to reader comment: Romney Is Not the Ideal Candidate for the U.S. and Its Ally Israel

Submitted by Sigmund Derman (United States), Jul 30, 2012 at 23:30

You are quite correct, Mr. Bouvier. Obama is already doing all the United States can possibly do. Romney's words are empty. Any American administration is going to support Israel with military aid. Any American administration is going to block UN resolutions that would be disastrous for Israel. No American administration is ever going to send American troops to save Israel. If you think Romney would do that you are suffering from dangerous delusions.

Israel needs to go beyond reliance on the US for support. It already has to some extent. Its new found oil, gas, and shale give it potential economic strength to reach out and make multinational alliances with other countries. It needs to frame the Israel/Arab conflict in larger terms so that additional resources and allies can be brought in. Neither a one state nor a two state solution, as presently envisioned, will work because these have already been thoroughly explored and they have failed. If the United States is really to help it can work with Israel and other nations to create some kind of a large enterprise zone in the Middle East that will appeal to economic and political interests of multiple nations. This will give the Arabs better choices than just attacking Israel vs agreeing to accepting Israel and getting virtually nothing in return. It would also give Israel better choices. But the major initiate for something new has to come from Israel. If Israel can't do it, no other nation can do it for her.
