second faulty assumption

Reader comment on item: Twenty Years of Illusion about Islamism

Submitted by myth (Germany), Jun 5, 2012 at 12:35

I detect a second, possibly faulty, assumption that persists today. It is the idea that political Islam is new.

I expect to find questions as well as answers in the history of countries that had to deal with majority muslim populations in situations of conflict. What are the experiences that India has dealing with Pakistan? What were the experiences of colonial Britain dealing with the bigger colonial India? What do we find in French history ruling Algeria? How did the political relations evolve between Russia and the former Soviet republics that were majority muslim? What is the nature of political contacts between muslim immigrants in Western Europe and their countries of origin?

My guess is, that the US is the newly arrived player, not political Islam.

It seems strange to me, that a discussion about political Islam leads to Israel within two minutes while it avoids countries like India, Russia or France.
