How do clever people get to be so stupid?

Reader comment on item: "Free Gaza" Flotilla Defeats the Israel Defense Forces

You are absolutely correct insofar as you go, in my opinion. But I do not buy that western leaders are so stupid that they cannot see what my untrained eye can see clear as day. And what your trained eye and excellent writing understands and presents. Western strategists are highly intelligent and perceptive people or they would never have risen to the heights they have within their careers. I seriously consider that there is an element of Tweedledum and Tweedledee here, and they have "agreed to have a battle". The enemies of the west are being allowed to win. In fact they are possibly being set up, or "allowed to win" by forces within the west. Otherwise it all simply could not happen. It would be so simple and easy to stop the rot. Dictatorships can do it and they do not have the ability to produce, or the force of morality on their side.

Simply, they do not, ultimately, have the resources without being propped up by productive societies. How much more simple for the relatively moral and productive West to stop the rot if it so wished to do so. The question this leaves me with is why does the West seem to be deliberately committing suicide? These things do not mystically happen. It is obviously someone's designed strategy. What is their goal?
