What is Success?

Reader comment on item: Destroying Sculptures of Muhammad

Submitted by Edward Halper (United States), Mar 2, 2008 at 13:20

I take issue with the assumption that the Islamists' aim is to get rid of the statues. Their more immediate end is to organize Muslims against the west.

The tactic places the west in a bind. Giving in to Islamist demands allows them to claim success and thereby to promote their organization. Resisting their demands fuels their anti-western organizing.

It is significant that this reaction is provoked to a statue of Muhammed: it is attempts to accord the Prophet the respect Muslims insist he should have that are used against us.

We need to recognize the Islamists for what they are. They want to end the human rights that are the cornerstone of western democracies. Congratulations to the Danish press for taking a firm stand for freedom!
