A well-documented summary of a neglected fireld of research. My own inquiries several years ago in the Alawi village of Rajar on the Israeli-Lebanese border revealed the general lack of knowledge and/or concealment of the religious tenets mentioned in the article. It was, therefore, an interesting and valuable read.
