in the arab world only two sects that are powerful the sunni's and the shiittes, alawites are only the minority in syria persecuted because of their indifference to the tenets of islam, they are almost the same with coptics, druze, christians etc. persecuted this were their driving force and motivation to rise to power to entrenched themselves against oppression and tyranny of their own brethen the sunni's. is a common logic for them to depend themselves or else they will be exterminated by the radical sunni's who see them the(alawites, druze, christian, etc) as infidels, yes the alawites are more secular than the sunni's they co existed with their neighbors the christian and the druze and more open minded to jews. israel should distance themselves on pressing down al assad but its the game of politics in the arab world there comes a time that al assad supported as a student then for the defeat and destruction of israel a newly established jewish state on that time. just like saddam who was toppled down by a westen conspiracy saddam is once a loyal ally of the west only to know that the west supported their mortal enemy iran so thats the turning point that saddam distanced himself against west and embraced the soviets, saddam tolerates the co existence of christians and arabs in his country without persecution unlike today as what the radical sunni's and al qaeda inspired mentality who sow hatred to christians and other sects or belief who are indifferent to the tenets and teachings of islam
