"Cell Based Terrorism"

Reader comment on item: The Snipers: Crazy or Jihadis?

Submitted by Hawkish (United States), Oct 29, 2002 at 11:58

I think people need to be educated about cell-based terrorism.

It has most often been seen in the US in the form of Animal Rights or ECO terrorism. An umbrella group or "front" provides a general statement of goals and acceptable targets and means, and then the faithful simply carry out these actions without any reference to, communicaiton from, or other support from the "mother" group.

That's exactly what's going on with the Jihadis. The Muslim extremists have identified all Americans as "legitimate" targets, but have left the specific campaigns to the individual footsoldiers.
