Hypocritical but deeply rooted customs

Reader comment on item: Strange Sex Stories from the Muslim World

Submitted by stanley b (Ukraine), May 21, 2012 at 10:38

As distasteful as it may seem to westerners, the customs and habits of Muslim men in the Arab world that are quranically forbidden are rampantly practiced in the dark, and with the most ridiculous justifications. It seems to be perfectly acceptable to do such things and not have any conscience about them, as long as they are done privately and not made a public scam. Once the offender is exposed publicly (and usually due to a westerner discovering it), the pretend outrage begins. In other words, anything goes in the Arab world as long as it isn't exposed to the light.
