MEK- Bad alternative for Iran

Reader comment on item: A Call for American Boldness in Iran

Submitted by Dan Eldar (Israel), Jun 24, 2009 at 09:25

Dear Prof. Pipes,

I've read your article twice and found it hard to understand your attraction to the MEK. Their ideology is a blurry and dangerous mixture of social (almost Marxist) radicalism and Islamic fundamentalism inspired by Ali Shariatti and Franz Fannon. Recalling back their political performance during the first years of the Islamic revolution , their terrorist activities were not less intensive and cruel than those of the Khomeinists. Nor were they pro-West or pro-Israelis to say the least.

Furthermore, one cannot forget their collaboration with Saddam Hussein installing their camps in Iraq. Their mentality is not different from the Ayatollahs in manipulating the Taqieh whenever suitable. And Madame Rajavi enjoing the French hospitality for political refugees(as also for Khomeini) has not transformed into a Parisian westernized democratic personality.

Therefore, I think that a flirt with the MEK, could be self defeating for the US as well as for the entire Western democracies once the Mek return to Iran .

Sincerely Yours

Dan Eldar

I am not "attracted" to the MeK. I see it as very useful versus Tehran.
