Muslim Immigrant Veterans

I am a Muslim by birth and am surprised to learn there are 3,500 Muslims in US Armed Forces because its against Islam to join a Non Moslim Army and this is what all Non Black Mosques in USA tell us. Almost all of these 3500 Muslims must be American Blacks, not Muslim Immigrants or their Descendants.

Could anybody confirm or deny this info and confirm there are 3500 Muslims in US Armed Forces?
I also want to know, many Muslim Veterans of War exist and how many of them are Non US Blacks or Immigrants or their Descendants?
