in response to reader comment: The Return of Gilad Schalit

Allow me to remind you of what Mark Twain said about the media: "if you don't read the newspaper you are uninformed, if you read the newspaper you are misinformed." Nothing has changed. The media are biased and in this case very strongly against Israel. The use of terminology is very important but many in the media are inexperienced and in the case of Israel do not have the background or the history of the conflict.

Recently I attended an event at GW in DC about Palestine and Israel. One of the students asked a question about the "uprising" in Israel; the discussion focused on Egypt and Tunisia. The professor responded with the word "uprising." I quickly took the mike and reminded all that in the Middle East, especially, the use of terminology is critical. There was no "uprising" in Israel. There was a protest both by the diary farmers and then later a much larger protest focusing on the high cost of living and the increasingly hiatus between the have and have nots. It is important for us all to keep tabs on the media and let them know when they are wrong and misleading, whether it be reporting or photos.
