Islam Minus West Equals Zero

Reader comment on item: On NASA's Strange Priorities

Submitted by Edward Cline (United States), Jul 6, 2010 at 19:45

Bolden's remarks about Obama's priorities would be hilarious if they were not tragically farcical and a conscious party-line blind to mislead. How seriously could Obama take "science" and "math" when his policies are deliberately founded on the pseudo-science of environmentalism, geared to "reinvigorate" the country, and the "math" of astronomical government spending and debt, both phenomena guaranteed to cripple this country for decades? How seriously can we take his desire to "reach out" to our enemies, but not to our allies? Very seriously. Obama is distinctly anti-American, much more so than was Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton. I do not think anything he has accomplished to date is a product of ignorance, executive inexperience, or naiveté, as some claim. Draw your own conclusions about his motives.

As for Muslims' poor track record in science, Mr. Pipes writes: "The problem lies in societies, and include everything from insufficient resources to poor education to the ravages of Islamism." Fundamentally, the problem is not societies per se, but the governing philosophy of a society. For centuries in the West, and in particular in America, the dominant philosophy was reason. Reason is in retreat now, and we can see the consequences here and in Europe. But Islamic societies by their nature cannot foster the kinds of achievements America can boast of. Innovations and discoveries come from the individual mind, and if a society's politics, coupled with a repressive theology, is anti-mind and anti-individual, that society will stagnate, if not perish. The so-called Islamic "golden age" (in Spain) existed side-by-side with Sharia and the enforced dhimmitude of local populations. The orthodox faction of Islam triumphed and shut down further "Westernization." Neither Saudi Arabia, nor Qatar, nor Dubai, nor Islamic Iran could exist without approprating the achievements of Western science and engineering.
