Appeasement

Reader comment on item: Appease Iran?

Submitted by Wayne (United States), Sep 29, 2008 at 01:28

Please note that "appeasement" presumes "humans to be reasonable and peaceful." That's fine. Except when you are dealing with humans who are not reasonable and peaceful. And that is the situation that has existed, exists now, and will continue to exist for the foreseeable future. That, as far as I'm concerned, mandates that appeasement is not a satisfactory approach.

When will some people wake up?

It used to be, when in fighting a war, you could recognize the "enemy" because they wore a uniform, a uniform different than yours. It used to be where the "enemy" could be seen on a somewhat clearly designated battlefield, not hiding within homes. It used to be when there were somewhat well recognized "rules of engagement." "Enemies' no longer subscribe to any of this!

If "we" continue to pursue "victory" be following practices and procedures to which the "other side" no longer subscribes, "we" will not win. This has nothing to do with being a "hawk" or a "dove." This has nothing to do with avowing to be a Quaker or some other believer in pacifism, nor being a "warmonger." It is just simple, plain fact!
