Reader comment on item: Converts to Terrorism

Submitted by Miriam (Australia), Dec 27, 2005 at 19:03

It would be unwise to slap all converts with the 'potential terrorist' brush. Many have gone from committed Christians to Islam because of dissatisfaction with the Trinity theology and a lack of belief in Jesus' divinity and the infallibility of the Gospels.

Many parts of Christian theology directly contradict what Jesus said and taught. He said that we are still under the Law and that not one jot or tittle shall pass from it until all is fulfilled. Yet Paul preaches that we are under grace and that the Law has been replaced by a new covenant initiated by the sacrifice of Jesus. Thus essential elements of the law such as the avoidance of pork and observance of the Sabbath (on the proper day) are basically ignored.

Many, many Christians have come to feel that this is wrong and that Paul was also wrong to argue that the Law could essentially be abandoned. The church, generally, does not allow room for these debates and doubts, particularly within the evangelical Christian community. Of course, new converts to Islam will quickly find that there is often not much room for discussion of core Islamic principles in their new community either. Converts tend to have a moderating effect more than anything and they are usually more interested in observing the rules and rituals of their adopted religion than in taking revenge on the community that they have left.
