Reader comment on item: [The Gaza Withdrawal:] A Democracy Killing Itself

Submitted by David Aronin (United States), Aug 17, 2005 at 02:13

Dr Pipes,

Although, as I had mentioned in previous comments, that I was disappointed that a campaign had not been first undertaken to destroy as much as possible of the resident terrorist groups in Gaza, prior to a withdrawal - both to undercut their ability cause future damage, as well as to prevent them from creditably portraying the Israeli pull-back as a terrorist victory - I can't agree that, even under the current circumstances - less than ideal as they are - the results will likely be as fundamentally devastating to Israel as you seem to think they will be.

Israel is still very strong, both in national spirit and in military strength. They could, if need be, come rolling back, and do the job left undone when things get out-of-hand. G-d willing, they will. I believe that it is largely Israel's position of strength, which may eventually make some peace settlement possible - as they can take back any conceded land if the PA fails to uphold their commitments to quell anti-Jewish violence. And, that as long as they have that strength and the willingness to use it effectively, it is worth while to keep some form of peace process in motion. The only alternative being, as I understand it, forcing a mass exodus of all Palestinians from the territories.

Thank you for your good work,

David Aronin
