Reader comment on item: Ariel Sharon's Folly

Submitted by Ivan (Australia), Apr 6, 2005 at 13:26

Unilateral disengagement might be acceptable if, inter alia:
[1] International pressure were already lifting from Israel and now constraining the PA.
[2] Europe were no longer casting every Israeli method of defence as immoral or disproportionate.
[3] The U.N. were currrently defending deserving souls in Darfur and Congo and restoring due rights to Israel.
[4] The Strip could be hermetic.
[5] There is some weapons system effective against mortars, howitzers and missiles.
[6] Israelis are not to become so demoralised and divided, or so intimidated, that they lose independence of spirit and self-interested policy-making [e.g. fail to keep open routes like that between Jerusalem and Ma'aleh Adumim, by preventing coalescence of separate Arab towns bestraddling the road].
[7] Israel will retain unchallenged sovereignty over sites essential for security. "Security for Peace" not mere Land or more Land for unattainable or temporaryaccommodation.
[8] Ariel is still in character, knows things we don't and has undisclosed strategies.

Then Dr Pipes and Israelis would sleep better.
