Forced removal in a democracy

Reader comment on item: Ariel Sharon's Folly

Submitted by jack adams (United States), Apr 5, 2005 at 15:57

While I always enjoy someone willing to stick fingers in the eyes of those who refuse to see the obvious when it comes to the perils of Islamofascism, Mr. Pipes challenge to his readers of finding a democracy where citizens have been displaced was a bit much. There are hundreds of cities all over the USA where developers have conspired with local politicians to drive hundreds of thousands of Americans out of their homes in the name of "Urban Renewal" or some equally idiotic social planning gimmick. My grandparents were kicked out of their farm 40 years ago so that a shopping center could be built on it using the theory of "eminent domain." The next time he takes off from LAX, he can look down at the site of hundreds of homes taken and bulldozed into oblivion when that airport decided to move thousands out of their homes overlooking the Pacific. The list could go on forever.
