The Gaza Pull-outReader comment on item: Ariel Sharon's Folly Submitted by Martin (United States), Apr 5, 2005 at 21:33 I agree it does seem ludicrus to evacuate 8000 citizens but Gaza is a snake pit and having failed to annex all, or as little, territory as Israel should have it does seem too late hold on to Gaza at this time. As a matter of fact, I do not believe Gaza is essential for Israeli's security or survival.Unless he's gone completely mad, one harbors the secret wish that there's some rational and laudable explanation for the pull-out which will soon come to the fore and all will heave a great sigh of relief. I cannot even guess what the answer might be. A diktat from Bush? A trade of Gaza for the West Bank? He's got to do something ---whatever it takes---to ensure the transfer will be as peaceful as possible. No shooting, or he's finished. These are high stakes and a mistake will be ruinious. This is nothing at all like Lebanon. If the Palestinians gloat, small triffle. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
