Good post.

I was born to Sunni Muslim parents. After I came to the USA, I read Muhammad Marmaduke Pikhthall's translation of the Qur'an and keep finding things that I missed out in my previous readings.

The whole "later Qur'anic verses supersede the earlier ones" is not necessarily valid. I believe that it was revealed over a period of 23 years and not all at once for several reasons.

One must take into account the audience at each stage. Certain parts of the Qur'an were specifically targeted towards specific people, times and places. Others are more universal. And many are open to various interpretations.

What atttracts me is the development of Muslim philosophy in Spain under Ibn Rushd (Averroes). What does make sense is when God in the Qur'an challengus mankind to THINK.

And that is what seems to be something that many people find too difficult to do, sad to say.
