We also get told of the source of the 'divine inspiration' here:

The people used to send presents to the Prophet on the day of 'Aisha's turn. 'Aisha said, "My companions (i.e. the other wives of the Prophet) gathered in the house of Um Salama and said, "0 Um Salama! By Allah, the people choose to send presents on the day of 'Aisha's turn and we too, love the good (i.e. presents etc.) as 'Aisha does. You should tell Allah's Apostle to tell the people to send their presents to him wherever he may be, or wherever his turn may be." Um Salama said that to the Prophet and he turned away from her, and when the Prophet returned to her (i.e. Um Salama), she repeated the same, and the Prophet again turned away, and when she told him the same for the third time, the Prophet said, "O Um Salama! Don't trouble me by harming 'Aisha, for by Allah, the Divine Inspiration never came to me while I was under the blanket of any woman amongst you except her."

Just as an aside - some other hitherto previously unknown (to me) passages came to light in tracking down the above. NOt so much to do with the rationalisation of why a 53 year old man would need to sleep with a 9 year old girl still playing with dolls - but more generally on the treatment of women. This I found quite disturbing:

"

***Abu-Dawud Book 38, Number 4458: ( Basically repeated in *Muslim hadiths Book 17, No. 4224: )
Narrated Ali ibn AbuTalib: A slave-girl belonging to the house of the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) committed fornication. He (the Prophet) said: Rush up, Ali, and inflict the prescribed punishment on her. I then hurried up, and saw that blood was flowing from her, and did not stop. So I came to him and he said: Have you finished inflicting (punishment on her)? I said: I went to her while her blood was flowing. He said: Leave her alone till her bleeding stops; then inflict the prescribed punishment on her. And inflict the prescribed punishment on those whom your right hands possess (i.e. slaves).

Many of the contributions on this site are by ex-Muslims. Obviously these are more of a threat to the 'true believers' than Jews, Christians, Buddhists and other assorted infidels.
