Europe's illegal immigration

Reader comment on item: Europe under Siege

Submitted by Ian Mordant (United Kingdom), Oct 18, 2005 at 14:53

Dear Sir,
I was surprised Dr Pipes didn't mention one of the answers to the problem of large numbers of impoverished people trying to gate-crash into Europe, and that is globalisation.

This is already bringing some new jobs to Africa and Asia, forcing Europeans to find other ones.

The place where this is most happening at the moment is Germany, which in some ways is doing what the Uk did in 1980's: let older industries decline and invest in more profitable ones, as well as easing labour market restrictions.

But globalisation is the only non-military answer to illegal immigration: maybe the US would consider increasing how many new immigrants it takes in each year?
