Reader comment on item: What If the United States Had Not Invaded Iraq

Submitted by Jerry M (United States), Sep 12, 2005 at 12:54

I am someone who never felt that there was any compelling reason to go to war with Iraq. There were good reasons for the US and the UK to end the stalemate with Iraq. The airforce overflights and the embargo were a public relations disaster. Going from a need to change this status to the understanding that the only way to change this status was war is a great leap that nobody has ever managed to fill (at least to my satisfaction). Even if one believes we should have gone to war eventually, nobody has shown why the US had to go to war when we did unprepared. There are (and were) a number of global crises that the US in involved in: N Korea, Iran, Israel/Palestine etc. The failed Iraq war has emboldened both Iran and N Korea. They know that the US simply doesn't have available resources to attack them.
