WHAT IF THE U.S. HAD NOT INVADED IRAQ

Reader comment on item: What If the United States Had Not Invaded Iraq

Dear Mr. Pipes:

As John Adams learned to his political detriment when he refused to commit the newborn U.S. to war with France, despite much justification, the political cost of standing for the right in the face of screaming non-thinkers often has a bitter cost to bear.

I fear that Mr. Bush, like Mr. Adams and in more recent times, Mr. Truman, will leave Washington with an approval rating around his shoetops. I'm an independent and have some major gripes with Mr. Bush on gas prices (oil refiners are the profit gougers in this instance) and the unprotected Mexican borders (a security problem of huge dimensions that he refuses to address) and forcing Israel to abandon the settlements (which will not make a modicum of difference in the hatred of Israelis by the so-called Palestinians).

However, in terms of our country's actions in Afghanistan and Iraq, I remain convinced that Mr. Bush did the right thing. The mewling of the far left socialists, media, movie actors, immoral rap singers, etc. to the contrary, Mr. Bush has acted to protect the country as did Mr. Adams and Mr. Truman. Like them, his legacy will be one of having done the right thing and having made some mistakes.

PS: The Federal Government's reaction to Katrina was NOT one of his mistakes - and I live on the Gulf Coast.
