Jewish Star patches and MMWAS buttons

Reader comment on item: A Muhammad Cartoon a Day

Submitted by Steven Ross (United States), Sep 21, 2012 at 14:39

Long ago I heard a story (true or not I don't know) that some non-Jews in WWII Nazi occupied Netherlands began wearing Jewish Star patches in support of their persecuted Jewish neighbors. So, twenty something years ago, the Salman Rushdie incident inspired me to make up and try to persuade my friends to join me in wearing MMWAS buttons, (Mohammed's Mother Wears Army Shoes.)

However, I quickly found that anyone I needed to explain the joke to, was too dense to understand it. Eventually, I tired of being seen as a warmongering bigot and gave it up.
